1948
The year 1948 was a year of the change, which determined that the next 40 years Czechoslovakia will move towards totalitarian system. Events in February of 1948, that Communists called “Victorious February”, we are today identifying as a communist upheaval, during which the democracy got destroyed and the dictatorship of communistic party was installed, also called dictatorship of proletariat. These events were preceded by a longtime efforts of Communists to discredited Democratic party. At the end, in February 1948, the government crisis started and there was a series of events that led to the complete takeover of the state. These events had been completed by the acceptance of resignations of non-Communist ministers, of then president Eduard Benes, who replaced their positions with former communist candidates. Subsequently, the new Communist government was confirmed and a new constitution declared - People’s Democratic Republic. On 30th of May 1948, elections were held with the forced participation and a possibility to choose from only a single list of candidates, which Communists controlled, National Front. A new president was elected, Communist Party gains the influence in CSSR, Hungary, Romania, Poland and Bulgaria.
